Looking for Ara’s and John’s parents. Father was born in Ireland and mother was born in Kentucky. According to the ages of Ara and John I guesstimate their births circa 1800.
Ara A. Ervin is my gg grandmother on my father's side. I do not know who her parents were but I know that she had an older brother named John. Of course the last name has been spelled several ways, Ervin has been the most consistent. Both John (1828) and Ara (1835 - 1838) were born in Alabama. Being a seven to ten year gap in their births, there were most likely other siblings.
John Ervin and Margarett H. Johnson married in 23 April 1857 Lauderdale, Mississippi. Ara shows up in an 1860 Scott Co., Mississippi census with her brother as head of household. John's wife Margarett, daughter Mary and son Robert show up in this census. Margarett, Mary and Robert were born in MS. Later children, John, Nancie and William Alfred were born in Arkansas.
Ara married Stephen Nowlen in 19 May 1861 Ashley Co., Arkansas. Ara married James Nowlen (Stephen's brother) in 04 November 1865 Ashley Co., Arkansas. James is my gg grandfather. Ara and James go on to live in Arkansas and have the following children: Lucy Emma 1866 AR Ferba 1868 AR Nancy Jane 1868 AR James Thomas 1876 AR.

1880 Census - Washington Township, Grant Co., Arkansas.
Ara died sometime after 1880 in Arkansas.

Thanks for posting. I was able to find all of the references you mention above. What I found most interesting was that in the 1860 Scott Co. census it lists certain members of this family with a different spelling of their last name. For example, it lists John Ervin, but then lists Margaret Irvin and Mary Irvin, then it goes back to listing the rest of the family with the Ervin spelling. Are you aware of any reason this might have occurred?
Do you know if Ara is short for Arabella? I noticed that in the 1880 census that they transcribed her name as Eva, but when you look at the name it is clearly Era. Have you been able to locate Ara in the 1850's?
