Mabel was my grandmother.

She always said that she had a twin brother but I do not see any record anywhere of this. Her mother was Mary Ervin and her father was James Ervin, they all lived in Hammond. I believe that Mabel was actually born on a farm in Illinois. Any news about her family would be appreciated.

Buckeye, welcome to the Ervin forums. I'm guessing that you are refering to Mabel, the daughter of James Harlan Ervin, son of Samuel Jr? I believe Mabel was born in Vermilion county Illinois. Do I have her birthplace posted differently on this site somewhere? Her family appears in the 1900 Ross township, Vermilion, IL census. The census image on ancestry.com is very hard to read but it appears that her older sister Bertha's birthplace is listed as Illinois but Jessie M's (Mabel) seems to be listed as Ohio. I think this is probably a mistake. Why would they have gone back to Ohio and then returned to Illinois? If you get a copy of Mabel's death certificate it may list her birthplace. I'm not sure if Illinois was doing birth records that early. You could check with the Vermilion county clerk. She has been very helpful in the past and happy to help.

As for a twin, there is a family member named Jim Ervin who has a web site at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/e/r/v/James-L-Ervin/index.html and he lists another child named Jay, that I have no record of. Perhaps this is Mabel's twin.

Do you happen to have any information on Mabel's sister Bertha. I haven't able to find any record of a marriage or death for her?

Mabel Ervin

" I do not know what happened to Mabel's Ervin's brother Jay. My grandmother died in 1965 in Silver Springs where she had lived for a very short time with her daughter, my Aunt Denise Hampton. Unfortunately my Dad (Gene Fehr Jr.) died young and when Aunt Denise died in 2005, we lost contact with her 4 children who lived in California.

My father came to Mahoning county to work for a railway fabricating company in Youngstown. I do remember my Grandma saying that she had lived on a farm but had relatives from "the river' in Ohio. She did clog and was an excellent cook. She had red hair and dark blue eyes. Her mother lived with her and my grandfather and their two kids in Hammond after her father passed away. My Dad also talked about his cousin Marjorie who I believe may have been Maude's daughter. They lived on a farm near Hammond when he grew up.

My family all live in Northeast Ohio now, but we had many trips to Hammond before my grandma died. I wish we had more info but the website is great so far. Grandma used to tell us that there was Native American ancestry somewhere in her background. I do not know if anyone has researched back that far."

Jill, I was able to to

Jill, I was able to to locate Mary Rodgers' (your gr grandmother's parents by talking with the mortuary that buried her. They went down in their dusty basement and dug through the very old records. Wonderful people!
Anyway, Mary's parents were listed as Lemuel Rodgers and Bethany Sutherland, both from Wood county, WV. Interestingly, this couple had two sets of twins so it seems to run in the family. I will email you a copy of what I have on them.

Twins

Jill, I just located the name of Mabel's twin brother and they really were born in Ohio as the census states. The birth records of Perry county Ohio have been transcribed by the LDS church and include a record for Jesse Mabel Ervin and Johile Ervin, both born the same day to James Ervin and Mary E. Rodgers in Pleasant township. I think Johile probably went by "Jay", the sibling Jim mentions on his website. I wonder what they were doing back in Ohio?
