Olivia also used the names Olive and Oliva. She was born July/Aug in 1809/10. Her 1850 census in Ripley Indiana lists her birth as Maryland and her age as 39, a widow with 7 children.  (Her husband Jeremiah Swing was the son of Samuel Swing and Mary "Polly" Murphy Swing.)My ancestor was her daughter Sara Jane  Swing Cole, age 16, then living next door with her husband Madison Cole age 23. In 1870 Olivia (Erwin) Swing is in the Warsaw, Ill. census age 60, living alone, but with her son "Jerry" Swing nearby. On the 1900 census her son lists his mother as born in West Virginia. (Did part of Marlyand later become West Virginia?) According to someone from the family Olivia Erwin died in 1874. I have no idea who her parents were.

Hi Joy, Could you also

Hi Joy,

Could you also provide additional information?  Do you know where she was in 1874 when she supposedly passed?  Specifically the county in which she died.  And also, how is her named spelled in the 1870 census that you found her in.

Thanks,

Amy Ervin-Smithson

Olivia Erwin

Hi Amy, thank you for your interest. I do not know where she died, I saw this 1874  death date on a  Swing family web site, but the family member who put it up has since died.  The name on the 1870 census was Oliva Swing, Hancock County Ill. I checked the Illinois statewide death index pre-1916 but did not find her. I think 1874 was too early to be recorded. My family has recorded all the other family lines so to have this one left out is very intriguing! She was listed on my family research papers as only "Olive"! My father told me that this side of my family was French-Canadian and Mr. Swing was from a French family, so I wonder if Olivia could be from a Canadian family.  There is also a possible Indian relative in my family, so maybe she is the one, although she is listed as white in the census records. Her son is in the 1900 census in Peoria, Ill. but she does not appear there.
